The key to successfully transitioning to vegan diet is planning your meals carefully and, ideally, ahead of time.

This will give you more time to carefully go through the ingredients list, especially when you are shopping for processed food items.

That’s right, just because a particular food item is mostly plant-based doesn’t mean it is entirely plant-based.

Since food labels don’t really say what foods can vegans not eat, it’s important that you know which particular ingredients are derived from animals.

Sounds tedious, I know, but you will eventually get the hang of it.

Guide To Eating Vegan: What Vegans Avoid Eating

Avoiding non-vegan food items is a lot easier when you’re buying fresh, unprocessed food items.

Just stay away from meat, dairy and other animal-derived food products, and you should be fine.

That means no eggs, no fish, no red meat, and no honey for you. That’s the easy part.

Going vegan can be quite tricky once you move to processed food items.

To make it easier for you to remember what foods can vegans not eat, I want you to keep in mind two non-vegan food categories:

  1. ingredients or additives that are derived from animals and
  2. foods that sometimes contain animal-derived ingredients

Ingredients or Additives Derived From Animals

These are some of the most common additives found in processed food items which you should definitely watch out for:

  • Gelatin: Gelatin is made from the bones, skin, and connective tissues of animals, usually cows and pigs. Gelatin is a very common thickening agent and can be found in many food items, particularly gummy bears, marshmallows, and Jell-O.
  • Natural flavorings: Just because something is tagged as “natural” doesn’t mean it’s plant-based. For example, castoreum is a natural flavoring, but it is derived from the secretions of beavers. To be sure, do a quick google search of natural flavorings first before purchasing certain food items.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids: There are algae-derived omega-3s, but not all food manufacturers make use of this vegan alternative. Typically, omega-3-enriched foods are fortified with fatty acids derived from fish, so you should be wary of this ingredient.

Foods Sometimes Containing Animal Derived Ingredients

There are also food items that are not always vegan… 

So you might want to either always check the ingredient list just the same or find a trusted vegan brand.

For example, some beer and wine are clarified using isinglass, a substance derived from fish.

Even some non-dairy creamers still contain casein, a milk-derived protein.
